Widowhood in Marraige

Widowhood is basically linked to the longevity of marriage in the case of a woman. As already mentioned in earlier chapters, marriage is a delicate relation, which involves two individuals who are initially totally unknown to each other, when after marrying each other they decide to spend their life together and create a family of their own. Creating a family for each other involves their comforts and joyous side of their family.Widowhood occurs when a wife loses her husband through death and does not remarry. According to Marjo Buitelaar, the word “widow” derives from the Latin, vidua which relates to a root meaning, “to place apart”. From this root word, widowhood is thus a separation of a woman from the husband through death.
Once a woman gets widowed, it demolishes the happiness of her cherished married life and deprives her from the fruits of a happy family. Widowhood refers to the status of a woman whose spouse has died. This state of having lost one’s spouse untimely and early in life is a big jolt to a woman and is classified as early widowhood.
Early widowhood causes intense grief, depression, disorientation in the family life apart from economic distress to a woman. Most of the times early widow hood results in social and cultural bindings and constraints for a woman. The loss of the husband through death generally represents the loss of a partner, a friend and a breadwinner.

As per Vedic shrastras a woman with a marital status in the society is a”Grehe-Lakshami”, which means a married woman in a house who with her noble credentials brings peace and prosperity to her family, while as a widow is considered otherwise and opposite to this position. Widowhood is a curse to a woman and who are fated to have disdainful treatment from our society. It results in a radical change in the woman’s social status and lifestyle. Widowhood tends to impact more traumatically on the woman thus changing her entire life pattern.
