As per classic books on astrology, the aptitudes of person for various professional skills and tendencies get depicted from the main birth chart, from the 10th house and the 10th lord, planets placed in the 10th house, planets in PAC position with the 10th house and its lord. In addition to that the classics prescribe to ascertain such professional skills and aptitudes from the position of the Navamsa occupied by the 10th lord of the main birth chart, from the Ascendant and Moon, whichever is stronger. The planet ruling the sign indicates the professional inclinations, capabilities and skills of a person, along with the expected source of earnings of that person.
1.1
As per Brihat Parashra Hora Shastra, the determination of the livelihood of a person, which means his or her profession, is assessed as under. (Refer Book ‘Parashara Hora’, Chapter 33’, “ Determination of Livelihood’ (Profession), English translation by Sh. P.K.Vasudev).
>> Quotes from the book:- Maharishi Parashara, made a mention that the 9th house of “Dharma, (fortune) and the 10th house of the “ Karma” ( action), shall be reckoned from the Ascendant or Moon, whichever is stronger amongst them and mutual relation between the them will give rise to a “ Rajayoga”. From the “ Karmstahana”, one learns about the means of livelihood.
1.2
As per Brihat Jataka by “ Varaha Mihira” “Adhyaya – X” captioned as “ Karamjeeva—Profession”, English translation by B. Suryanarain Rao, the determination of the profession of a person, is mentioned as under :-
>> Shaloka-1, mentions that “ From Sun, etc, the acquisition of wealth must be predicted through father, mother, enemy, friend, brother, woman and servant respectively, when it occupies the 10th house from the birth chart or Moon or through the lord of the Navamsha occupied by the lord of the 10th house, from birth, the Moon or the Sun.
To elaborate it further, taking the lagna or the Moon at birth and locating the planet in the 10th house, it works out as under as shown in the table below as per above Shaloka:-
S. No. | Planet Placed in the 10th House | Source of Income |
1 | Sun | It will be through Father. |
2 | Moon | It will be through Mother |
3 | Mars | It will be through an Enemy. |
4 | Mercury | It will be through a Friend. |
5 | Jupiter | It will be through Brother . |
6 | Venus | It will be through Wife . |
7 | Saturn | It will be through Servants . |
>> It has semblance with the postulates of “Prashara Hora” too, as mentioned above. In the modern context it may not apply fully, as the present professional standards are many and a modern day professional strives very hard to stand on its own legs, so far as his or her professional earnings are concerned and does not want to remain dependent on any other support either from his immediate relatives or acquaintances. However, such a postulate may get linked to one’s leanings to one’s professions, or an additionally in one’s income or wealth. However, under all circumstances it has to be applied very cautiously. It may not stand the full testimony of the present times. It can be a variable for the income of a person. Suppose a person is doing a government job and simultaneously a silent partner in his family business of his parents or with a friend or involved in a business run by his or her spouse and thus fetching some recurring income, it can be called as an additional income to the person concerned from that source. That is why this postulate may not receive absolute support and credence in its absolute and lone form, as for as the attaining of wealth by a person is concerned. It is said that the eminent scholars of astrology also do not support this postulate in its entirety. Its applicability is thus restricted.
>>In its further elaboration the author of this book B. Suryanarain Rao mentions that if there are two planets in the 10th house, from lagna or Moon, the most powerful amongst these two should be identified, which will the source of wealth in one’s profession. Similarly, he mentions that if there are two or more planets in the 10th house from lagna or Moon or from both, the source of money will flow as ascribed to these various planets, during their Dashas or Antardashas periods.
>>Similarly the learned author has further elaborated it by mentioning that if there is no planet in the 10th house from lagna or Moon, Varaha Mihira’s postulate in this regard recommends that take the lord of the Navamsha occupied by the lord of the 10th house, from Bha ( lagna) , Indu (Moon) and Arka ( Sun) and ascribe the source of income as per the significations of that planet. The author further says that “ Bhagvan-Gargi”, supports the above views distinctly.
>> Shaloka-2, mentions that if the lord of the Navamsha is Sun , the person may get wealth through scents, gold, wool, medicines etc. if the lord of the Navansha is Moon, a person may get wealth through agriculture, watery products and dependence upon women etc. if the lord of the Navamsha is Mars, a person may get wealth through minerals, fire, weapons, adventures and physical strength. If the lord of the Navamsha is Mercury, a person may get wealth through writing, mathematics, poetry and fine arts etc.
>> Shaloka-3, mentions that if the lord of the Navamsha is Jupiter, a person may get wealth from Brahmins, priests, Gods, in mines, or through manufacturing and through charities. If the lord of the Navamsha is Venus, the person may get wealth through gems, silver, cows, buffaloes etc. If the lord of the Navamsha is Saturn, a person may get wealth from labor, by low artisanship’s, excavations, carriers etc.
>> The above postulates of “ Varaha-Mihira” are the basics in this regard and have been recommended by almost all the classic books of astrology for the source of earnings of a person as per his/ her profession.
>> It thus means that 10th house / 10th lord, planets placed in the 10th house, planets in conjunction and aspects with the 10th house and the 10th lord, along with the planet which represents the Navamsha position of the 10th lord, in case there is no planet in the 10th house from lagna or Moon, are the fundamental sources to locate the source of income of a person by virtue of his or her professional earnings. These very planets along with the relevant transits will have a direct bearings during their dasha and antar dasha periods on the professional earnings of a person.
1.3
Clubbing the various parameters as per the Shalokas of “ Varaha-Mihira” as indicated above regarding the source of earnings of a person through various planets, along with the specific specifications of various planets placed in the 10th house, or linked to the 10th house, or as per the position of the Navamsha lord planet of the 10th house, a broader view of the source of the earnings of a person, through one’s profession in the modern day context of various professional availabilities can be generalized as under:-

1.4
It is a settled norm that any profession technical, semi technical or non-technical has its base in the education pattern of a person, which one adopts for earning purposes. So the two have a distinct link between them.
The professional careers now available are many as already mentioned above, as compared to a position when these postulates have emerged from great astrological scholars. A distinction can be made in this regard as under:
A: Technical education which one opts may lead one to be a doctor of various faculties or an engineer of different disciplines.
B: Semi technical or non technical education may a lead a person to opt for law, chartered accountancy, commerce, MBA’s, MCA’s, company secretary courses, postgraduates of various subjects, applied sciences, geology, geo physics, nuclear physics, applied chemistry, biology, micro biology, ecological sciences, sociology, environmental sciences, psychology, anthropology and the like.
C: A new trend has emerged in the present day advanced educational curricula, when after qualifying graduation or even post graduations, both in technical and semi technical educational fields, the present day professionals want to excel in advanced computer educational skills, like soft ware’s, hard wares, data preservations, etc, which are linked to IT Industry of the present day, when the monetary returns in this field of profession are quite lucrative and attracting.
D: Equally one may not lose sight of the fact that amongst the brilliant one’s from both the technocrats and the non technocrats mostly opt for bureaucratic services like IAS, IPS, IFS, IRS, etc. This is probably considered an elitist services as for as the Indian society and services are concerned. Such a profession has no limitations of the educational backgrounds, which are many and varied.
Looking to the scenario above, about the educational curricula and the availability of varied professions now, It will thus be a challenging job for a leaned astrologer to identify the profession of a person, with accurate proximity and reliability. It will need an exhaustive knowledge of planets, rashi’s, nakhshtras, various houses ( bhawas), benefic planetary yogas or malefic planetary combinations coupled with a through grip on the transits aspects of astrology for a prudent astrologer to attain in this regard before coming to predictive conclusions about the possible earnings of a person by virtue of one’s profession of sorts.
1.5
As already mentioned in chapter 1, dealing with the education, Sh. K.N.Rao our Jyotish Guru has some time back advised some cogent determinants of education for various planets, when that type of education, which mostly determines the profession of a person for further research and application. This is shown in table-1, of that chapter.
Divisional Charts:-
The role of divisional charts relevant to profession, apart from the main birth chart have enough relevance for arriving at a confirmative conclusion about the parameters of the educational standards of a person.
In this regard the main divisional charts which are associated with education are the Navamsha Chart (D-9) and the Dashmansha chart ( D-10 ).
Navamsha:-
Navamsha chart has a distinct role to play to ascertain the strength of the planets placed in the main birth chart, in the Navasmhsa chart. In this regard, the position of the, lagna and its lord, the 10th house and the 10th lord of the main birth chart in the Navamsha chart has to be assessed. The position of the 10th lord of the Navamsha chart, in the main birth chart has to be assessed which is very much vital to arrive at the pattern of profession one may adopt. Equally the position of the 10th house and the 10th lord of the Navamsha chart also needs to be assed individually, for giving a clue about the profession of a person. The PAC position of the 10th lord of the Navamsha chart is also to be ascertained, for arriving at a logical conclusion about the profession of a person. Benefic placement of the lords of the lagna lord and the 10th lord of the Navamsha chart in the main birth chart, will augur quite well for one’s education.
Dashamsha (D-10):-
When a sign of 30 degrees is divided into 10 equal parts, each such part is known as “Dashamsha”, meaning 1/10th of the main sign. Each such a division becomes of 3º (degrees). This chart also known as D-10 Chart is an important varga chart which is used in assessing the professional standards and achievements of a person. It indicates the professional aptitude of a person with the level of success in it. It is considered as the extension of the 10th house of the main birth chart, thus relates to the various types of ‘Karmic” actions of a person, which fundamentally relates to the field of activity of a person in one’s life time, which have direct link to the profession of a person. This divisional chart depicts the outcome of the results of a good or the bad destiny thereof. This divisional chart shows the results of a person in respect of his / her efforts in the professional fields, the elevations and the debacles like demotions and obstacles out of the same. It relates to the levels of the destiny of a person along with his/her status, honor and possible successes in life. It indicates prestige and power of a person in the domain of one’s society.
For a better position of one’s profession the lagna, lagna lord, 10th house and the 10th lord of this varga chart, must be beneficially placed. The position of the 10th lord of the main birth chart assessed both from lagna as also from Moon lagna, should be well placed in this divisional chart. The position of the other houses and their lords, of the “ Artha-Trikonas’ viz, the 2nd and the 6th houses and their lords, apart from the 10th house and its lord, should be well placed and have benefic influences in this varga chart.
