 Planets with Characteristics——Part-1

It has been mentioned in earlier chapters that the horoscope is the chart of the heavens at a particular moment of time and place. It  indicates  the scheme of the 12 signs of the Zodiac, representing the 12 houses of the horoscope,  when each such sign occupies the 12 houses in order of their sequence,  with the planetary position in the various houses of the Zodiac at that particular moment of time and place. The Zodiac consists of 360 degrees. This is further divided in to 12 parts of 30 degrees each, called houses ( Bhavas) represented by various  signs ( rashis), depending upon the sign rising on the eastern horizon which becomes the Ascendant (Lagna), the first house of the horoscope. With the planets being placed in various houses as per the planetary position of that birth time, a birth chart is created which is called as Horoscope. The sign ruled by a particular planet of a particular house is called as its lord. Alternatively, to say it will be the lord of that particular house (Bhava). The characteristics of the twelve houses of a horoscope have been described in the chapter-7, of this book. Likewise the nine planets, Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu, contribute to the different houses of a horoscope astrologically, once getting placed in various houses of a horoscope,  as per the planetary position of that event of the  birth of a person or any epoch. It is thus essential to understand the individual characteristics of these planets. ( Rahu and Ketu though imaginary points are taken as planets for knowing their characteristic ( significations) for the purposes of their astrological  role while  getting placed in a house of the horoscope, for predictive purposes.   

(A)—–The general significations of these planets are described as under:-

Sun:-

Sun owns Leo sign. Sun has Satwick or benevolent temper.  Sun represents soul, body,  self realization, power, valor, health,  physical strength, general wellbeing, father, comforts of father,  king, kingly pursuits, kingdom, royal and royal fervor, politics, honor, splendor,  fame and honor, courage, awakening of knowledge, enlightenment,  administration, enthusiasm, competence,  mental puritans, world of mortals, capturing foes, competence, leader, devotion to Lord Shiva,  travelling,   medical science,  physician, electricity, summer, forests, mountains,  river banks, trees, face, body,  anger, hostility, indignation, ornaments, gold, pearls, copper, ruby, gem stones, timber, saffron, lotus, cow,  strong at noon, eastern direction and right eye etc. As per the four casts, Sun represents ‘Kshatriyas’ cast.  Sun is one of the major planets of planetary cabinet, which counts a lot in the astrological predictions, as Sun represents some of the vital parameters of a person in his or her horoscope.   Sun is masculine in gender.

Moon:- 

Moon owns Cancer sign.  Sun has Satwick or benevolent temper.   Sun representing soul, Moon is the mind (Manas).  Moon is the significator of mind,  mother, comforts from mother, emotions, sleep, happiness, affluence, luster, royal favor, wealth, travel, name and fame, heart, left eye, comfort through finances, beauty, sharp intellect, longevity, facial luster, nature of the mind, contentment  etc. Moon represents intelligence, royal favors,  beauty, happiness, sleep, sense of humor, capabilities, mental agility, nature, control over one’s mind, modesty, kindness, love, vehicles, laziness, sense of humor, liquids, water, fineness of one’s dress, milk, honey, fruits, fishes, aquatic animals, flowers, perfumes, pearls, perfumes, silver, pleasures, splendor, energy, snakes, reptiles,  wheat, diamonds, sugar cane, rice, lakes, pilgrimages, middle age etc. As per the four casts, Moon represents ‘Vaishya’ cast. Moon represents north northwest direction,  Moon has enough importance in astrological predictions, when apart from the main lagna chart, the Moon representing the mind, thus Moon chart is also analyzed for astrological predictive purposes.  Moon represents worship of “Gauri”, the consort of ‘Shiva’. Moon is feminine  in gender.

Mars:-

 Mars owns Aries and Scorpio signs. Mars is Tamsick in character.   Mars is the significator of stamina, courage, strength,  valor, desires,  determination, anger, scandals, diseases, body strength,  pride, ruling over people, administration, administrative capabilities, leadership of a village or town, commander of an army,  men in high positions, ruler ship, carrying weapons,  virility and its loss,  oppositions, foes, charitable nature, ruler over religious places, archeologist, geologists, religious endowments,  controversies and arguments, obstinacy, foolishness, fame, victory over enemies, skill of handling of weapons, risky adventures, leadership qualities, archery, criticism of others,  army, cruelty, adultery, enemy’s strength, capacity to award punishments, speech, fickle nature, imbalance of mind,  fire, ailments, wounds,  accidents, injuries by weapons and burns, blood,  surgery,  land, immovable properties, army, men in uniform, police, wars,  controlling wild animals, relatives like cousins, younger brothers and sisters, leadership,   doctors, scientists, mechanical engineers, dental treatment, etc. Mars also signifies eating nonvegetarian foods,  summer, heat, service under a ruler,  land, buildings, builder, estates agent, burnt place, earthen ware,  gold, goldsmith, copper, snakes, red color, poison, pungent taste, trees etc. As per the four casts, Mars represents the ‘Kshatriyas’ cast and south direction. It is Masculine in gender.

Mercury:-   

Mercury owns Gemini and Virgo signs. Mercury  is Rajasika  in character.   Mercury is the significator of  speech, education, intelligence,  oratory expression, oration, good conversation, learning, mathematics, accounts, grammar, logic, astrology, astronomy, philosophical knowledge, power of expression,  writing, publishing, dancing, drama, discrimination, medical profession, trees, precious stones, charm, arguing, computer education, mathematics, auditors, secretaries, brain, diplomacy, planning capacity, politics, varied capabilities, gemology, etc. In addition to above, Mercury is the significator of editorship,  journalist, minister, trader,  trade and commerce, treasury, pilgrimages, sculptor, temples,  religious rites, mental aptitude, knowledge of ‘Vedas’, knowledge of  religious scriptures, black magic, mantra skills, renunciation, tantric pursuits, self control, horses, birds, autumn,  or the beginning of winter,  , green color, eunuch  etc. Mercury also signifies a prince, maternal uncle, maternal grandfather, younger siblings, physician, temples, precious stones etc. Mercury represents chartered accountants, financial experts, merchants etc. Mercury gives the knowledge of ‘Mantras’ and ‘Yantras’. Going for pilgrimages and the building of temples is the signification of Mercury. Mercury is linked to the ‘Vaishyas’  as per the cast system. Mercury represents northern direction Mercury indicates the skills of a person in the testing of precious stones and makes a person a powerful tantric. 

Jupiter:-  

Jupiter owns Sagittarius and Pisces   signs. Jupiter  is Satwick  in character Jupiter is the significator of wisdom, intellect, learning, logic,  philosophy and philosophers, philosophical learning, sharpness, religious merit, wealth, treasure,  riches, happiness, knowledge,  good qualities, high standard of life, advisors,  honor from the king, royal throne,  ministers, status, knowledge of Vedas, religion, dharma, righteousness, good conduct,  judiciary, law and its learning,  indulging in good acts, affection. Jupiter also signifies preachers, shastras, religious learning, religious heads,  religious preaching’s, authors of books, knowledge of mantras, performing religious and moral acts,  elders, progeny,  elder brothers and sisters, grandfather, grandchildren, husbands for females, disciples,  honor and titles received from the government, national awards, friends, justice, managerial capacity, lecturers, college principals, vice-chancellors, legal experts, fortunes,  discriminatory capacities. Jupiter also signifies, judges, advocates, legal experts, management experts, bankers, spirituality, spiritual saints,  spiritual thinking,  higher education, astrology, astronomy,  broadmindedness, political diplomacy, control over senses, scriptures, corpulence, indignation, arrogance,  fruity trees, etc.  Jupiter represents the divine source. Jupiter also signifies, devotion, doing good to others, impartial outlook, charity, penance, places of pilgrimages, physical health, yellow topaz, yellow color, precious stones, gold, honey, decorations,  salt and turmeric, cows, buffaloes, elephants, etc.  It has the status of ‘Brahmin’ as per the caste classification. Jupiter represents northeast direction and the early half of winter.  

Venus:-

Venus own Taurus and Libra signs. Venus   is Rajasika in character.  Venus is the significator of wife, marriage, females, sexual pleasures, sensual pleasures, conjugal   bliss, genital organs, perfumes, luxuries, sex pursuits, ornaments, jewelry, articles of luxury, wealth, vehicles and conveyances, jewelers,  textile, dress, jewels, flowers, flowering trees, beauty, buying and selling, cows, watery places, film industry, dancing, dancers,  drama, dramatists, literature, culture,  business involving females, music, singing, hotels, hoteliers, honor, respect, honorary titles, fame, fortune,  status, kingdom, royal favors, high standard, tasty food, drinks, theaters, foreign pleasure tours, studios, bedrooms, keen intellect, keen knowledge, poets, poetry, literature, epics, musical compositions, photography, make ups, beauty parlors, tenderness,  underground wealth, speculations, etc. Jupiter also signifies, overindulgence in sex, sexual perversion, adultery, affairs with many women, beauty, youth, perfumes, dealing in perfumes, beautiful cloths, fortune, radiance, fragrance, ornaments, diamonds, pearls, physical comforts, fine arts, elephants, horses, cattle, musical instruments, ancient culture, agriculture, servants, swimming  etc. Venus represents southeast direction and the spring season. Venus as per caste system falls in the ‘Brahmin’ group. Venus shows the middle age and other family members and their prosperity. The family prosperity is seen from Venus.  Venus is strong in the afternoon. Venus represents computer-software’s, in the modern context. 

Saturn:-

Saturn  own Capricorn  and Aquarius  signs. Saturn    is Tamsick  in character Saturn is the significator of longevity, life death, adversity, calamities, disrespect, diseases, poverty, livelihood, fear, employment, one’s profession,  obstructions, distress, humiliations, stupidity, enmity,  sorrow, punishments, allegations, fate, bad conduct, illiteracy,  tiredness, indignations, bad postures, ugly figure, shabby looks, falsehood and deceit, cruelty, sinful  actions,  friends of the wicked, evolution of life in stages, labor, laborer’s, bodily efforts, expertise in science, agriculture, minerals, metals, oil hidden below ground, archeology, servants, slaves, old people, theft, uncourteous acts, over greed, provocations, temptations towards politics, leaders in politics, etc. Saturn represents professional skills of law and judiciary, justice, administration of justice, philosophical bent of mind, detachment and renunciation etc. Saturn shows old age, indebtedness, penury, income from infamy sources, companionship with the wicked, favors from the inferiors, wandering tendencies,  slavery, horses, elephants, goats, buffaloes, dogs, oil wood,  steel, iron, machines, workshop, head of iron related industry, black grains, precious stones, agriculture and farming, tamsik qualities, happiness from woman,  unending difficulties and sorrows, rotten eatables, etc.  Saturn also signifies, danger, accidents, spoiled character, unjust behavior, lameness, handicapped, glass, manure, grain, salt, the servant class, laborers,  thefts, hard heartedness,  etc. Saturn represents democrats. If Sun is the aristocrat, Mars is the dictator, Saturn is the democrat. In astrological language, Saturn has been described to be a cruel planet only, but there is a positive side of Saturn too, when it works as a mentor and a modifier for a person in his or her life. Saturn is reformative in its character. Saturn balances the good and bad, win and loss. So, it is called the God of justice. Saturn is a hard taskmaster. It instructs us to work hard, be disciplined. If we want success in life, then discipline should be the virtue for this. Saturn bestows salvation and liberation from the shackles of birth and rebirth. Saturn is the planet of bestowing the ecstasy of spirituality to a person.  Saturn represents western direction, second half of winter and represents ‘Shudras’ as per the classification of the casts.  

Rahu:-

Rahu signifies false hood, faulty logic, an irreligious behavior, irrelevant  arguments, sudden happenings, restlessness, dependence on low people, benefits from outcastes and inferiors,   foreigners, harsh speech, gambling, travelling, foreign travel, long travel, pilgrimages,  wickedness, sins,  outcasts, wicked thoughts, very low cast people, etc. Rahu also signifies  snake bites, dreams, thefts, widow, skin diseases, itches, theft, eczema, acute pain in body, poison, smuggling, rituals of black magic, going to mountains,  old age, poison,  hesitation, wandering, south west direction, paternal  grandparents,  gambling, emerald, forests, disasters, technical education,  knowledge of politics, etc. (Uttara-Kalamritta) mentions maternal grandparents as well  being  represented by Rahu). 

Ketu:-

Ketu is the significator of  worship of the lord of Chandi, Ganesha and others,  spiritual and divinity,  knowledge of self, knowledge of mantras’,  involvement in tantras, secretive learning, renunciation, detachment, religious philosophy, knowledge  of Vedas,  great penance, bathing in Ganges ( holy rivers), pilgrimages, Vedanta knowledge, “Moksha” etc. Ketu also indicates  medical practitioners physicians, surgical treatments, incurable diseases, trouble from enemies and detractors,  injury,  consumption, pain, fever, wounds, witchcraft, causing trouble to enemies, skin diseases, philosophy, self-realization, Vedanta knowledge, maternal grandfather, vultures, dogs, deer, cocks, horned animals, thorns, stones, hunger, small pox, boils, association with the ‘Shudras’, etc.

(B)—–Specific significations of planets for pointed relations and social set ups:

Sun: – Sun is the King of the planetary cabinet. Sun represents Father and Profession. Sun represents kingdom, monarchy that means a renowned dignitary in the modern set up.  Kings are represented by highly placed political leaders, persons of high authority and bureaucracy in the modern concept of democracy.

Moon: – Moon also represents royalty in the planetary cabin it. Moon represents Mother and Mind. Moon represents, learned persons and renowned persons.

Mars: – Mars is the commander in chief in the planetary cabinet. Mars represents  brothers, sisters and co-borns. Mars represents army, police, militia and men in uniform. Mars represents administrators, persons in high positions. Mars has a role to play in one’s marriage too. It is because of this aspect of Mars that ‘Kuja-Dosha’ is very prominent a factor in Vedic astrology.

Mercury: – Mercury is the prince in the planetary cabinet. Mercury among relations represents maternal Uncle and first cousins.  It also represents knowledge, power of speech, eloquence in debates, education and Learning. As per “Uttar-Kalamrita”, Kalidasa, Mercury signifies maternal grandfather. Some  astrologers attribute business also to Mercury in the modern set up of time.

Jupiter: – Jupiter is considered as the Guru of Gods and thus considered a divine force.  Jupiter represents progeny, elder brother,  wealth, elders in family, head of the family to guide, gains, education,  teacher, etc. Jupiter stands for scholars and advisors too. In judiciary Jupiter represents the lawyers, judges, legal experts, managers of top levels, the bankers etc. 

Venus: – Venus is considered to be the Guru of Asuras (Monsters).  Venus represents spouse, vehicle, houses and immovable property. Venus represents art of various forms. It represents culture, art of all sorts and artists, drama and dramatists, singing and singers, acting and actors, poets, hotels and hoteliers.   Venus represents vehicles, conveyances, jewelry, richness and the family prosperity.

Saturn: – Saturn represents as a servant in the planetary cabinet. Saturn indicates longevity, servants, services, sickness, old age, sickness, etc.  Immature astrologers mostly misrepresent the role of Saturn. Saturn also represents some vital benefic significations that are most of the time overlooked. Saturn is the time keeper and at times a reformer, as unless a person does not meet adversity, he or she does not adopt the path of reformation and self-introspection. Saturn makes a person to do so. Saturn represents old houses and structures, aged persons. Saturn represents democracy and democrats. It is said that if Sun is the aristocrat, Mars the dictator, Saturn represents a democrat.  Saturn represents justice and deliverance of justice to the oppressed. Saturn represents free and fair elections to choose political representatives. Saturn represents politics and politicians.

Rahu:-  Rahu represents low castes and low category people. It indicates foreign relations. As for as the profession is concerned it represents engineers, architects, politicians, pilots, technical professions etc.

Ketu:- Ketu represents linguists, computers and computer engineers, doctors of other allied medical professions, inventors, psychologists, etc.  

(C)—–Planets and Medical astrology:-

For seeing the role of various planets in regard to the medical astrology,  a summarized account of these planets in regard to the health standards of a person are enumerated as under:-

Sun:– Sun represents (Pitta) bilious  characteristics,  Sun shows the physical strength of a person, along with the soundness of health of a person. Sun rules over heart, stomach, bones and the right eye. It shows inflammation in body parts, old age, head, headaches, diseases of head, heart, heart trouble and heart failures, arteries, conditions of blood circulation, foregut, bones, stomach, acidity, bile, fever, injuries, burns, injury from falls, epilepsy, baldness, right eye, disease of liver and gall bladder, stomach ailments, leprosy,  etc.

Moon:- Moon represents (Khapa) phlegmatic characteristics, with an element of (Vaata) wind.   Moon represents mind and its condition, mental state of a person, mental illness,  psychiatric problems, emotions, mother and her health conditions, pleurisy, phlegmatic disorders, injuries, burns, blood disorders, tuberculosis, malarial fever, sleep disorders,   fluids in the body, ulcers, epilepsy, acidity, menstrual cycles in ladies. Moon also represents anemia, septicemia (blood poisoning), jaundice, etc.    

Mars:-  Mars  represents (Pitta) bilious  characteristics. Mars is indicative of energy, vitality,   soundness of health, physical fitness and virility. Mars rules over  head, bile, bone marrow,  hemoglobin, red blood cells,  blood disorders, inflammation, muscles, accidents, burns, injuries, surgery and surgical operations, blood pressure, wounds, diseases above neck, biliary diseases, miscarriages, gall stone, poisoning, epilepsy, etc.

Mercury:- Mercury represents all the three characteristics of  Vatta, Pitta and  Kapha. Mercury signifies disease of throat, nose, ears, lungs, forebrain, nervousness, nervous breakdown,  mental instability, defective speech, vertigo, skin, impotence, sexual organs, etc. An adverse combination of Mercury and a malefic Moon may result in one’s mental instability and break down in nervous system. It signifies diseases of eyes, deafness, ear diseases, etc.  

Jupiter:- Jupiter  represents the characteristics of  (Khapa) phlegmatic characteristics. In medical astrology Jupiter indicates the diseases of liver, gall bladder, spleen, pancreas, obesity, general anemia, fever, diabetes, ear trouble etc. Jupiter indicates the diseases of digestion and knees as well.  Jupiter being the most benefic planet, it protects a person from diseases and neutralizes the effects of diseases.  Jupiter being a slow moving planet, the diseases given by it are chronic in nature that takes much time to get cured.

Venus:–  Venus represents the characteristics of  (Khapa) and Vaata). In medical astrology Venus governs the venereal diseases, diseases of urinary system, seminal fluids, reproductive organs, sexual disorders, diseases of the generative organs, kidney and bladder,  kidney stones, intestinal diseases, appendix problems, urethral blockades, etc. Venus also indicates diabetes, typhoid, eye diseases particularly vision, cataract, leucoderma, endocrine disorders which indicate hormonal imbalances.

Saturn:- Saturn represents  partly the characteristics of (Vaata) and partly ( Kapha). It is a slow moving planet, when the diseases caused by it are chronic in nature and sometimes incurable. This has to be taken as an indication only as with the development of medical science most of the identified fatal diseases are curable now. However, Saturn causing a disease, will take a long time to cure and will give chronic diseases.  In medical science, it indicates chronic diseases, diseases of feet, legs, skin, nerves, fatigue, lameness, depression, amputation of body parts, insanity, exhaustion, etc.  Saturn also indicates glandular disease, tumors, cancers, diseases of colon and rectum, stomach ailments, serious injuries, diseases of limbs, unexpected diseases, etc.

Rahu:-  Rahu shows the diseases of bones, poisoning, insanity, chronic diseases, leprosy, psycho fears, phobia,  ulcers, diseases of incurable natures, snake bites, feet, clumsiness, chronic boils, malignant tumors’.  Rahu’s role in medical astrology can be equated with that of Saturn as for as the incurability and chronicity of diseases are concerned.

Ketu:- Ketu gives all the diseases as are attributed to Rahu. Ketu is responsible for viral diseases, epidemic diseases, diseases of uncertain cause, infective diseases, fevers, diseases through worms, tuberculosis, mental  instability, chronic intestinal parasite diseases, insanity, defects of speech, diseases not easy to diagnose, speech disturbances, deafness, surgical operations, etc.

Note:- The above indications of diseases are mentioned only  for reference purposes. Planets getting highly afflicted, its significations too show enough of afflictions. Being the significator of so many parts of the body and organs, it has to be studied with caution as to the houses, signs, the dasha lords, the Karkas, which get affected by such an afflicted planet before reaching to a diagnosis of its medical effects.

1. Exalted Planets give 100 % good results. Such a planet gives a person high positions in the society, accords him/her valor and dignity.

2. Mool-Trikona position of a planet is considered good. It bestows comforts and favors to a person. (About 25% good results)

 3. Own house position of a planet is generally very good and is much favorable for a person. It bestows good favors and results to a person. (About 50% good results) 

4. Friendly house position is mostly a calm position of such a planet for the person.  It does not disturb the person concerned, unless it is not under any malefic influence.  (About 25% good results)

5. Neutral house position of a planet gives just 12.5 % good results. But a person shall have to put in lot of hard work to achieve success. (About 20 % good results)

6. Debilitation house position of a planet generally gives malefic and unfavorable results, unless the debilitation does not  get  cancelled.   

7.  Inimical house position of a planet mostly gives rise to hostility and animosity to a person and does not contribute to his/ her prosperity at all. 

(F)—-Relationship of Planets, Natural and Temporary: –

a, Natural ( Naisargik)  Friends of planets :-

Principle Number-1:- The planets which are lords of the houses 2nd, 12th, 5th, 9th,  4th and 8th from its Mool-Trikona signs are friends, apart from  the lords of its signs of exaltation.

Principle Number-2:- Lords of 3rd, 6th, 11th, 7th and 10th from its Mool-Trikona signs are enemies.Principle Number-3:- If a Planet becomes a friend and becomes an enemy on the other count, then it is considered neutral.

(b), Temporal (Tatkalik)- Friends/ Enemies: –

Planets besides their natural placement as friends, enemies, neutrals towards to each other in a horoscope, such planets equally become friends or enemies to each other depending upon their location in a horoscope.  

The planets placed in the 2nd, 12th, 3rd, 11th, 4th and the 10th from any planet become its temporal friend.

The planets placed in houses 1st, 7th, 5th, 9th, 6thand 8th from any planet become its temporal enemies.

(G)—Planetary Conditions of its Strength:-   ( Avastas Of Planets) :

Planets moving in the zodiac attain different states or conditions of existence, which are called as (Avastas). Results which a planet can give has its link and reference to its conditions of strength, which is called as ((Avasthas) of planets,  meaning there by its strength in different forms. This classification of the (Avasthas) of planets is shown below is as per the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra principles:-

I. Baladi—Avastas   ————– (Physical Sates of Planets): –

The various ( Avasthas) of these planets are categorized as  1,Infant (Bal Avastha), 2,Youthful (Kumar Avastha), 3, Adolescent (Yuva Avastha),4, Old ( Vriddha Avastha) and 5, Dead ( Mrit Avastha). These five states are dependent on the degrees attained by the planet in a sign ( Rashi). In odd signs, these states of planets are placed in ascending order at the rate of 6 degrees, when in even signs these are placed in descending order at the rate of 6 degrees. The table below gives a full picture of these planets in respect of its strength ( Avasthas).

Planets in the “Balavastha”, shows only 1/4th results of its promise, when in “Kumara Avastha”, these provide only one half results of its promise. Planets placed in “Yuvavastha” shows full results of its promise, when the planets in “Virdhavastha” produce very little results of its promise. In “Mritavastha”, planets are incapable to show any results of its promise or may give adverse results.

As per “Phaladeepika” a planet in “Blavastha” provides progressive benefits, in “ Kumaravastha)  comforts, in “Yuvastha” royal fervor and in “ Vridhavastha”  not good results. A planet in “Mritavastha” provides death like situations and negative results only. (These are to be taken as general circumstances of a planet and the results should not be applied literally but liberally depending upon the other astrological factors of the planet concerned). 

II. Deeptadi—-Avasthas —— (Physical  &  Mental States of Planets):-

 There are about nine planetary conditions under this classification.

1. Deepta Avastha. It means the shining or luminous situation of a planet. A planet in its exaltation or in its Mool-Trikona sign falls under this category.  Such a planet bestows royal favor, high status, wealth, vehicles, honor, good progeny and comforts of life during its dasha period.

2. Swastha Avastha. It means the stable condition of a planet. A planet in its own house falls under this category. Such a planet bestows good health, good education, fame, name, lands, wife, gains from the government and religious feelings during its dasha period.

3. Mudita Avastha.  It means a delighted condition of a planet. A planet in the house of its bosom friend (extra-friendship) falls under this category. Such a planet bestows happiness from children, wealth, clothes, perfumes, interest in religious pursuits, vehicles and ornaments, during its dasha period. 

4. Shanta Avastha. It means a calm condition of a planet. A planet in its friend’s house falls in this category. Such a planet bestows happiness of sorts, gains from land, favors from the government, vehicles, education, honor, acquisition of wealth, study of religious scriptures and tendency towards religious pursuits during its dasha period.

5. Deena Avastha. It means a weak condition of a planet. A planet in its neutral house falls under this category. Such a planet gives opposition from one’s relations and friends during its dasha.  It shows humiliation and change of work place, illness and sufferance from diseases during its dasha period.

6. Dukhi Avastha. It means a painful condition of a planet. A planet in its enemy’s house falls under this category. Such a planet gives displacement and long journeys, separation from one’s relations, conditions of loss, theft or fire and fear from the authorities during its dasha period.

7.  Vikhal Avastha. It means a grief stricken condition of a planet. A planet associated with malefic planets falls under this category. Such a planet gives mental tensions and worries, restlessness, worries, death or death like situation or separation from near one’s and troubles from progeny, spouse and thieves during its dasha period.

8. Khala Avastha. It means a wicked position of a planet. A planet in its malefic sign falls under this category. Such a planet makes one to have quarrels, separation from father and mother, gives trouble from enemies and shows loss of wealth and properties, humiliation and contempt towards others during its dasha period.

9. Kopa ( Krudha Avastha). It means an angry position of a planet. A planet, which is combust with Sun, falls under this category. Such a planet makes a person to undergo loss of wealth, do sinful deeds, loss of spouse and progeny and suffer from eye trouble during its dasha period.

III. Jagradadi-Avastahs ————- (Consciousness States of Planets):-

There are about three planetary conditions under this classification, depending upon the extent of the level of the consciousness of a planet.

1. Jagradi Avastha. It means a condition of a wakefulness of a planet. A planet in its exaltation or located in its own house falls under this category. Such a planet bestows a person with full benefic results during its dasha period.

2. Swapna Avastha. It means a dreamful condition of a planet. A planet in its friend’s house or a neutral house falls under this category. Such a planet bestows medium results during its dasha period.

3. Sushupti Avastha. It means a condition of sleep of a planet. A planet in its debilitation condition or located in its enemy’s house falls under this category. Such a planet does not produce favorable results during its dasha period.

  IV. Lajjitadi – Avasthas——— (Positional States of Planets):-

There are about six planetary conditions under this classification, depending upon the extent of the level of the mental state of a planet.

1.Lajjita Avastha. As per BPHS, a planet placed in the 5th house with a node, or with Sun, Saturn or Mars, it is said to be in Lajitta Avastha. It means that a planet placed in the 5th house with Rahu or Ketu, or either with Sun, Saturn or Mars, it is said to be in Lajitta Avastha.  If a planet in the 5th house is in Lajjitavastha, there will be destruction of progeny, or there will be only one surviving child. If a planet posited in the 10th house is in Lajjitavastha, the person will always be subjected to miseries. A planet in Lajjitavastha will make a person averse to God, it will give loss of intelligence, loss of child and resort to  evil speeches  By and large the placement of a planet in Lajjitavastha is not good and gives bad results like, quarrelsome nature, not following one’s religion, humiliations and miseries, illness to progeny during its dasha period.

2. Garvita Avastha. As per BPHS, if a planet is in exaltation or in Moolatrikona, it is said to be in Garvitavastha. A planet in Garvitavastha will cause happiness through new houses and gardens, royal  hood, skill in arts, financial gains at all times, and improvement in business. Such a placement of the planet will bestow favor from the royal authorities, give new houses to live with adorned gardens, good rise in one’s business, flip in one’s wealth and endowment of  good skill in the field of one’s arts during its dasha period.

3. Kshudhita Avastha. As per BPHS, if a planet is in its enemy’s sign or conjunct with an inimical planet, or aspected by an inimical planet, or even conjunct with Saturn, it is said to be in Kshudhita Avastha. A planet in Kshudhita Avastha, will cause downfall due to grief and sorrow, grief on account of relatives, decline from positions, troubles from enemies, loss of physical strength, financial distress and a clouded mind on account of miseries during its dasha period.  

V. Shayanadi Avasthas:-

This is another group of status of the ‘Avasthas’ of the planets,  which includes both the physical and the mental states of conditions of various planets. These are twelve in number, depending upon their physical and mental tendencies. These Avasthas are briefly mentioned here as under:-

1, Shayana Avasttha, 2, Upavesha Avastha, 3, Netrapani Avestha, 4, Prakashana Avestha, 5, Gamanechchha Avestha, 6, Gamana Avestha, 7, Sabhayam Avestha, 8, Agama Avastha, 9, Bhojana Avastha, 10, Nrityalipsa Avastha, 11, Kautuka Avastha, 12, Nidra Avastha.

The methods to determine and calculate these Avasthas are mentioned in detail in the BPHS. These have not been mentioned in this book at this preliminary stage of learning of astrology in this book.
