What is Sixty Fourth Navamsha ?
The 64th Navamsha is a sensitive area in a birth chart, which mostly causes some bad moments or events in one’s life. Standard astrological classics like Brihad Prasha Hora Shashtra , Jatak Parijatta and the like make a mention of certain important astrological points in a birth chart and the transit over these astrological points particularly by slow moving planet like Saturn, can create malefic results in one’s life which can be classified as a distress of sorts in one’s life time. Sixty Fourth Navamsha is one such example. Its lord is known as Chhidhra Graha (Planet) or as a Khara Navmsha as well.
The following planets are called as the Chhidhra Grahas:-
- The lord of the 8th house.
- The planet occupying the 8th house.
- The planet aspecting the 8th house.
- The planets in conjunction with the lord of the 8th house.
- The bitter ( Attishatru ) enemy of the lord of the 8th house.
- The lord of the 22nd Dreshkona from Lagna (Ascsndant).
- The lord of the Sixty Fourth Navamsha from Moon.
It is observed that the death of a person may occur during the major, antar or the p.antar dasha periods of the strongest grahas, amongst the above Chidra Grahas, of course depending upon other parameters of the horoscope of a person coupled with other astrological circumstances like the transit conditions of that time or period etc. In fact the Chidra Grahas dasha periods cause one or the other malefic results during their operational time periods.
The dasha, antar dasha and the pratya antar dasha periods of the lord of the 64th Navamsha are also susceptible to give malefic results.
How to calculate the 64th Navamsha:-
The 64th Navamsha of lagna ( Ascendant), or from any planet is worked out by placing the degrees of the lagna or any planet in the eighth house from it and then calculate the navamsha from the concerned 8th house for the lagna or the concerned planet and that will give the position of the 64th navamsha for that lagna or the concerned planet. So it will be the same Navamsha from the 8th house from the lagna or the planet, whatever the case.
To illustrate it further, let us presume that the lagna (Ascendant) is Scorpio and falls in 4th Navamsha and the Moon is placed in the 4th house in the sign of Aquarius and is in the 7th Navamsha. For the lagna the 8th sign will be Gemini sign and the 4th Navamsha from it will be the Capricorn sign the 3rd house of the main chart. So the Capricorn sign (rashi) viz, the 3rd house will be the 64th Navmasha for the lagna and Saturn will be the lord of this 64th Navamsha. Similarly for Moon, the 8th house from its position viz, Aquarius will be Virgo. From Virgo sign ( Rashi), the 7th Navamsha will be Cancer sign viz, the 9th house of the main chart and Moon will be its lord. So for this birth chart Saturn and Moon will be the Chidhra Grahas, since both these planets are the lords of the 64th Navamshas from the lagna and the Moon respectively.
To know it very easily, the 64th nnavamsha is the 4th house sign from the lagna ( ascendant) sign , or the sign occupied by Moon or the sign occupied by any planet in the navamsha Chart.
Where From to Calculate the 64th Navamsha?
As per BPHS it should be calculated from both the lagna as also the Moon sign , where as Jataka Parijata mentions to calculate it from Mon only. The Prasana Marga mentions to calculate it from lagna, Moon and Sun equally.
But calculating 64th Navamsha from all the houses is always better so that it gets known as to when the negativity of each bhava is going to occur.
22nd Dreshkona.
22nd Dreshkona is also a sensitive area in a horoscope which has almost the same significations as that of the 64th Navamsha.
Prasana Marga in Adhya XIX Verse 61, mentions about the longevity of a person as: – If the lord of the Navamsha occupied by the Moon is inimical, neutral or friendly to the lord of the 64th Navamsha, then the longevity of a person will be short, medium or long.
22nd Dreshkona is calculated by placing the degrees of the lagna in the 8th house of the birth chart and then accordingly to calculate the appropriate dreshkona from the 8th house itself. It can be either the 8th house sign, or the 12th house sign or the 4th house sign depending upon the lagna degrees. If the lagna degrees range from (00 deg-10 deg) then the 22nd Dreshkona will be the 8th house sign only and its lord will be the lord of this dreshkona. If the lagna degrees range from (10deg-20deg), then the 22nd Dreshkona will be the 12th house sign and its lord will be the lord of this dreshkona. If the lagna degrees range from (20deg-30deg), then the 22nd Dreshkona will be the 4 th house sign and its lord will be the lord of this dreshkona.
The 22nd Dreshkona from that of the lagna is called as ‘Khara Drekhana. The 64th Navamsha from the Moon is called as Khara Navamsha.
The 1st, 5th and the 9th Navamsha of the dual signs have a common sign as the 64th Navamsha and the 22nd Dreshkona.
To elaborate it further it can mean that when a planet is in Virgo sign at 3 degrees, the 64th navamsha will be the Aries sign and the 22nd Dreshkona sign will also be Aries sign. So its lord is Mars. For any planet in this Navamsha, Mars becomes a malefic a malefic Khara planet for the planet concerned.
Such a malefic nature of this planet increases much more if the planet is also in the Vish Navamsha as well. (Vish Navamsha is defined below).
It is further stipulated that:-
The 64th Navamsha sign and the 22nd Dreshkona sign is same.
The planet is in Vish Navamsha.
The planet is in Sun’s Hora.
Some Inferences about the 64th Navamsha:- ( As observed by various classic astrological books )
1. Prasana Marga in Adhya XIX Verse 61, mentions about the longevity of a person as: – If the lord of the Navamsha occupied by the Moon is inimical, neutral or friendly to the lord of the 64th Navamsha, then the longevity of a person will be short, medium or long.
2. When the lord of the 64th Navamsha from Moon and the lord of the 22nd Dreshkona, happen to be the same planet and this planet transits a sign which has no bindus in ashtakvarga, then the death is unavoidable. (In fact this needs to be diluted and made applicable in reference to the other benefic or malefic planetary situations of a birth chart. It has not to be applied verbatim).
3. The death of a person may occur during the transit of Moon over 64th Navamsha, to be counted from either the ascendant at birth or the Moon at birth. ( Here again, this postulate has to be applied with care only as the main dasha operating at that point of time along with its other sub periods or sub sub periods must be death inflicting dasha periods).
4. The transit of malefic planets over the 64th Navamsha, results in some long lasting effects to a person.
5. The above position gets worst when a malefic planet is placed in the sign of the 64th Navamsha.
6. The transit of slow moving malefic planets like Saturn, Rahu and Ketu over the 64th Navamsha give results of a long lasting & significant nature. In comparison to this the slow moving planets produce results of lesser magnitude. (See the illustration chart no.1, in this behalf).
7. A malefic planet placed in the 64th Navamsha of any planet creates harm to the significations of that planet and the house it rules. (See the illustration chart no.2, in this behalf).
8. Death of a close relative is indicative when the Rahu transits the 64th Navamsha to be assessed either from the ascendant or Moon. (See the illustration chart no. 3, in this behalf).
9. If the lord of the 64th Navamsha reckoned from ascendant or Moon, is placed in the 6th, 8th or the 12th house and is in conjunction with Saturn then a person is indicative of facing his death by swallowing poison.
10. If the lord of the lord of the 64th Navamsha reckoned from the ascendant or Moon is in conjunction with either Rahu or Ketu and is placed in the 6th, 8th or the 12th house then a person is indicative of facing his death by gallows. (See the illustration chart no.4, in this behalf).
11. Matters related to Mundane astrology like earthquakes, cyclones, heat waves, cold waves, heavy rains, heavy floods, droughts etc, are also predictable from the transits of fast moving planets like, Sun, Mars and Venus over the 64th navamsha.
(Note:- These postulates need to be applied with care only as the main dasha operating at that point of time along with its other sub periods or sub sub periods must be death inflicting dasha periods).
Example Chart No:- 1 ( Death of Mother)
Self:- DOB:- 27-2-1941, TOB:-1:13:00,POB:-Srinagar, Kashmir

64th Navamsha from the lagna is Capricorn and its lord is Saturn. Rahu was transiting Capricorn sign in August-1953 and the mother of the author died on 9th August-193. Capricorn sign is also located 12th to the 4th house and the location of Moon the karka of mother and is the 64th Navamsha as well. So the death of the mother. The dasha was Jupiter/Rahu/Moon. So the inference No.6 as mentioned above about the creating of a long and lasting event of significant nature in the shape of losing the mother for good gets ramified.
Example Chart No:- 2. (Death of Husband).
Smt. Indra Gandhi. DOB:-19-11-1917, TOB:-23:11:00, POB:-Allahabad.

In this case the 64th Navamsha from Venus and the 7th lord Mercury is Capricorn rashi and Saturn and Ketu are laced there. Her husband died at a young age, Venus being karka of husband and Mercury representS the husband being the 7th lord. So the inference No.7 as mentioned above about the planet creates harm to the significations of that planet and the house it rules get confirmed.
Example Chart No:- 3 (Death of a close Relative )
Self:- DOB:- 27-2-1941, TOB:-1:13:00,POB:-Srinagar, Kashmir.

64th Navamsha from the Moon is Cancer sign and its lord is Moon. Rahu is transiting Cancer sign presently and death of the brother in law of this author occurred on July 2017, followed by the death of sister in law in September-2017. So the inference No.8 as mentioned above about the death of a nearest relative gets ramified.
Example Chart No:-4 (Death by Gallows).
Z.A.Bhutoo:- DOB: – 05-01-1928, TOB:-1726:00, POB:-Larkana PK99, Pakistan

64th Navmsha from lagna is Aries and its lord is Mars. Mars is placed in the 6th house in Rahu/Keu axis. This is the combination as per inference No. 10, mentioned above, for facing death by gallows. So it applies to this chart fully. He was hanged on 4-4-1979. The dasha was Saturn/Mars/Rahu. Saturn is the lord of 22nd dreshkona as well.
Vish Navamsha :-
Again there are some other navamshas which are quite malefic and one amongst them is Vish Navamsha. These navamshas are as under:-
1. 1st Navmsha of Aries, Taurus, Virgo and Sagittarius. (These are known as Sarpa Navamsha).
2. 5th Navamsha of Gemini, Leo, Libra and Aquarius. (These are known as Gridha Navamsha.
3. 9th Navamsha of Cancer, Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces. (These are known as Shooker Navamsha).
Any planet in these Navamshas is harmful to the relatives signified by these planets. For example if Moon is in this navamsha then it can mean harm to the mother. Similar is the case for other planets.
Nidhanamsha:-
Any planet, if placed in the Navamsha chart in a sign which is owned by the 8th sign in the main rashi chart, it is known as Nidhanamshasthana. As such there can be nine Nidhanamshathana in a chart, in nine different signs, at a distance of 40 degrees.
To exemplify it further it can be explained as:- Suppose the Ascendant is Aries and in that case the 8th house falls in the Scorpio sign. If Mars the ascendant lord gets placed in Scorpio sign in the Navamsha chart because of its degrees, then Mars is said to be Nidhanamshastha.
Jataka Parijata mentions that when the ascendant lord is placed in the Navamsha, in the rasi which is owned by the 8th house of the rashi chart, or is eclipsed by Sun or is in the 6th house, the person will die of starvation or on the bare ground when no relations will be by his side at the time of his death.
Example:-1, Mahatama Gandhi Ji. DOB:- 02-10-1968, TOB:- 8:40:00, POB:- Porbander, Gujrat

The ascendant is Libra and its lord is Venus placed in the ascendant itself. Venus in Navamsha falls in Taurus the 8th sign of the main rashi chart . So this combination fulfills the above conditions of the Venus the ascendant lord being in the navamsha in the 8th rashi of the main birth chart which is Taurus. So its Nidhanamshastha. He breathed his last when he felt to the bullets of an assassin, when no blood relation was by his side.
Example:-2. Smt. Indra Gandhi. DOB:-19-11-1917, TOB:-23:11:00, POB:-Allahabad.

The ascendant is Cancer and its lord being Moon placed in the 7th house in Capricorn rashi. In Navamsha Moon is in Aquarius rashi which is the 8th house sign of the main rashi chart. It fulfills the above condition to the extent that the ascendant lord Moon is in the 8th house sign of the rashi chart in the Navamsha chart. So it is Nidhanamshastha. She succumbed to the bullets of the assassins, when no blood relation was by her side.
Ashtamamsha :-
Word Ashtamamsha in astrological parlance has three different significations;-
1. It represents the 1/8th part of a sign viz, 3 degrees & 45 minutes. It is a Rashi Varga which is used under the “Shodasha- Vargas”, (Twenty Vargas) group, suggested under the various Varga Stipulation Groups by sage Parashara.
2. One eighth part of a sign used represented by 3 degrees & 45 minutes, used in the “Ashatakvarga”, called as ‘Kakhshya’
3. 8th Navamsha of a sign ranging from 23 deg-20 min to 26 deg-40 min.
For purposes of its interpretations here in this chapter it has significance as:-
Any planet if placed in any sign in the rashi chart is falling in the 8th sign from its place in the navamsha chart, is known as Ashtamamashtaha.
For example if Sun is in the placed in Libra sign in the rashi chart and finds a place in Taurus sign in the Navamsha chart, viz, in 8th sign from its original placement in the rashi chart, it will be known as Ashtamamashtaha.
Similarly if Sun is placed in the Virgo sign in the rashi chart being in 4th Navamsha, and thus finds a place in the Navamsha chart in Aries sign it will be known as Ashtamamashtaha.
Note: – All the fixed signs have no Ashamamsha in these rashis.
As per some astrological classic books the significations of some planets in the Astamamshas, some significant results are mentioned as under:- (Reference ‘ Nadi Astrology & Deva Keralam’).
Short life is indicative if Sun is in four dual signs viz, Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces signs, and occupies Capricorn, Aries, Cancer and Libra Navamshas. This means that these rashis are in 4th Navamshas and acquire 8th sign in navamsha from their position of placements.
Grief and unhappiness is indicative if Jupiter being in Sagittarius, Pisces and Capricorn signs in the main rashi charts and occupies Cancer, Libra and Leo Navmshasa in the Navamsha charts.
Thus Jupiter inspite of being in its own signs in Sagittarius and Pisces signs does not produce favourable results because of its placement in the Ashtamamsha.
(Note:- These being a general conditions and these postulates need to be applied with care only, as the significations cited above will vary with the other benefic planetary positions in a birth chart ).
The undisputed powerful utility of Navamsha chart which is equally called as “Dharmamsha’ as well, is needed to be ascertained fully, by observing its powerful influence on the main birth chart, which needs to be understood fully well. It is mentioned in all the classics books of astrology that to predict only with the help of the main birth chart is not the final astrological predictive verdict. In the regard two types of charts are mentioned in standard astrological norms when the Navamsha can be used for predictive techniques in a unique way. These are:-
1. Rashi-Tuliya Navamsha. 2. Navamsha Tuliya Rashi
1. Rashi-Tuliya Navamsha:-
Rashi Tuliya Navamsha technique is mostly used as per nadi literature, when it can be used for normal rashi chart analysis, as well as for the timing of events as per the transits, when the placement of the planets in the Navamsha chart are projected in the Rashi chart and study the results there from.
To make it easier the ascendant sign is retained as per the main birth chart and the planets placed in various bhavas in the Navamsha chart are placed in this chart in its various bahavas, as per the placement of these planets in the Navamsha chart. This reframed chart is known as Rashi Tuliya Navamsha Chart.
This sensitive astrological way of perditions is attributed to the fact that the main birth chart is one’s present life and the Navamsha chart is one’s destiny which one carries from one’s past janma. “Navamsha shows the inherited samaskaras”. So the correlation of planets by this method from the navamsha chart to the birth chart retaining the ascendant of the main birth chart at its own place, is supposed to give more insight on the nature of the results of the planets.
To differentiate between the main birth chart and the Navamsha chart the great maharishis have suggested different nomenclatures for the planets getting placed in various bhavas. These are defined as follows as per their placement in various bhavas:-
In Lagna————Lagnamsha, In 2nd Bhava——–Dhanamsha, In 3rd Bhava————Vikramasha
In 4th Bhava——–Sukhamsha, In 5th Bhava———Putramsha, In 6th Bhava ————-Ariamsha
In 7th Bhava———Kalatramsha, In 8th Bhava———Nidhanamsha, In 9th Bhava——– Bhagyamsha,
In 10th Bhava——–Karmamsha, In 11th Bhava——–Labhamsha, In 12th Bhava———-Vyayamsha.
An example chart in this regard.

In this case the situation of the planets as per Rashi Tulya Navamsha is as under:-
Since the lagna is Vargottama the lagna of the main chart and the navamsha chart is the same. But the planetary position is different.
So the lagna is in Lagnamsha and is Vargottama.
1. Mars placed in the lagna in the main chart in Aquarius rashi and is in the Libra rashi in the Navamsha chart which is the 9th bhava of the rashi chart, so Mars is in Bhagyamsha or Dharmasha.
2. Moon is in lagna in Aquarius rashi and is in Taurus rashi in the Navamsha , which is the 4th bhava of the rashi chart, so Moon is in Sukhamsha. It is equally in Pushkara Navmsha as well.
3. Saturn the lagna lord is in the 4th house in Taurus rashi and in Navmsha it is in Aries rashi which is the 3rd house of the rashi chart, so Saturn is in Vikramasha.
4. Jupiter is in the 10th house in Scorpio rashi and is again in Scorpio rashi in the Navamsha, which is the 10th bhava of the rashi chart, thus Jupiter is in Karmamsha. Jupiter here is Vargottama as well.
5. Sun is in the 9th house of the rashi chart in the Libra rashi and in the navamshs it is in the Capricorn rashi which is the 12th bhava of the rashi chart, thus Sun is in Vyayamsha.
6. Venus is in the 9th house in the rashi chart in the Libra rashi and in Navamsha rashi it is in Gemini rashi, which is the 5th bhava of the rashi chart, thus in the Putramsha..
7. Mercury is in the 9th house of the rashi chart in the Libra rashi and in Navamsha it is in the Taurus rashi, which is the 4th bhava of the rashi chart, thus Mercury is in the Sukhamsha. Mercury here is in Pushkara Navamsha as well.
8. Rahu is in the 12th house in the rashi chart in the Capricorn rashi and in the navamsha chart it is in the Gemini rashi which is the 5th bhava of the rashi chart, thus Rahu is in Putramsha.
9. Ketu is in the 6th house in the rashi chart in the Cancer rashi and in navamsha it is in Sagittarius sign which is the 11th bhava of the rashi chart, thus Ketu is in the Labhamsha.
By this method all the 12 Navamshas are attributed additional nomenclature as per their navamsha signs falling in the main rash chart.
This way the planetary strength is ascertained fully. A planet or planets looking very powerful in the main birth chart and forming yogas of highest order should stand the testimony through Navamsha as well.
If more planets fall in benefic amshas, like Bhagyamsha, Karamsha, Lagnamsha or the Sukhamsha , a person will lead a happy and a prosperous life. In the alternative if more planets fall in the Shashtamsha, Nidhanamsha or the Vyayamsha or Ashtamsha then one may face bottlenecks and difficulties in one’s life.
2. Navamsha Tuliya Rashi This is a chart that is created by retaining the Lagna of the Navasmsha chart and placing th planets in it as per the Rashi chart. It has an equivalent significance and is best used to read the transit results of planets. Transit is a very wide topic and many classical texts have given many clues on the interpretation of transits in both Rasi and divisional charts. Some verses from classic books on astrology write on the transit of various planets in the rasi chart while considering the planets in the same rasi in the Navamsa Chart. This principle of reckoning Rasi in the Navamsa chart is called the Navamsa Tuliya Rasi.
