This world is said to have begun with Brahma’s ‘Manas Shrishti’, when Brahma willed and a life in the shape of a human being viz, a “Pursh” came to existence. This process of creation was loaded with two serious shortcomings. The first such short coming was that with the Brahma’s desire only ‘Pursh’ could get created, who was to carry and perform prayers , perform ‘hawans’ (yagnas) and then attain ‘Moksha’.
The second shortcoming was that this process was not a self regenerating and hence there was stagnation, decrease in population and ultimately back to zero population. Therefore, Brahma had to create Pursh (men) again and again. This lead to creation of humans through sex, known as ‘Maithun Shrishti.
However all powerful Creator ‘The Brahma’ is said to have been at a loss as to how to create a woman. He had a realization that in this regard he will have to seek the guidance and blessings of Lord Shiva.
Story of Ardhnarishwar.
Lord Shiva responded to the repeated appeals of the Lord Brahma in this regard and took the form of ‘Ardhnarishwar and subsequently ‘Shiva Devi’ came in to existence. Lord Brahma pleaded to her and put forward his difficulties, seeking her grace to grant him the ability to create a woman. On being pleased with his prayers ‘Shiva Devi’ emitted a divine light from between her eyes, which took the form of ‘Shakti’ and entered Lord Brahma’s heart and gave him with the ability to create woman. ‘Shiva Devi’ also agreed to Lord Brahma’s request to be born as Daksha’s daughter.
But for ‘Maithun Shristi’ to be successfully implemented it was important for men and women to get attracted to each other. Thus all devtas approached ‘Kamdev’ for help in getting ‘Mahadev Shanker’ attracted towards ‘Parvati’ and initiating ‘Maithun Shrishti’.
How ‘Kamdev’ was reduced to Ashes.
‘Kamdev’ followed by ‘Devtas’ set out to ‘Kailash’, where ‘Lord Shiva’ was engrossed in his ‘Tapasya’. After ‘Kamadev’ along with his friend ‘Vasant’ aimed his arrow at Lord Shiva, He felt attracted towards Parvati. This surprised him and he wondered as to what was the cause of this distraction and disturbance in his cosmic meditation. His probe in all directions led him to see ‘Kamdev’, on his left with his bow and arrow to aim at Lord Shiva. This irked Lord Shiva so much, that he with his cosmic powers reduced the Kamdeva to ashes.
Lord Shiva was persuaded by Parwati and sought his grace and blessings for the Kamdeva. Lord Shiva blessed and said that Kamdeva would take a human form after Lord Vishnu takes Avtar as Lord Sri Krishna and would be born out of the Rukhmani’s womb. Lord Shiva said that He would be named as ‘Pradymn’, but till it happens he would enter every beings heart in the form of ‘Ananda’.
This led to the beginning of ‘creation through sex’. After this to safe guard and self regulate the human race as also to maintain the sanctity of marriage and sanctity of its institution in the society, certain social, legal and moral codes were enforced and Manusmriti elaborates it in its codes in detail.
Manusmirti.
In ancient times a human being on an average was supposed to have a life span of 100 years. This span of life was equally divided into four parts. Each such part was denominated as an ‘Ashram’. These four ‘Ashrams’ were classified as ‘Brahamchary’, ‘Grihasta’, ‘Vanprastha’ and ‘ Sanyasa’. Out of these Grahastha is the span when a person gets married and creates a family and lives a family life, as also discharges his duties towards the society.
This therefore is the most important ‘Ashram’ (Span), from the social point of view, which is scrutinized keenly by one and all.
The ‘Shastras ‘lay down marriage as a sacred duty which entails both social and religious obligations.
Manusmiriti lays down certain codes pertaining to the marriages with certain do’s and don’ts involved in the institution of marriage. These mostly relate to the age of marriage, responsibilities of marriage, respect for woman after marriage, maintaining of mutual cordial relationships after the marriage, love for each other in the act of marriage, maintaining of a decent family life with good social standards after the marriage, sincerity and honesty to each other after marriage. This is just a summarized form of these norms and there are detailed codified norms mentioned in the Manusumriti for the act of marriage as also for the institution of marriage.
In the modern times as well we have defined laws which regulate legally the bondages of marriage between the two marrying or married partners.
Matching in Marriages.
Marriage is one of the most sacred and pious social events of life in the context of Indian culture.
It is solemnized to become a vital bond between the two marrying partners who are basically two different human souls. It can thus fill one’s life with immense and perpetual joy or it can mean otherwise as well. How to synthesize it astrologically? Vedic astrology has the answer. The commonly known traditional method for ensuring a healthy, wealthy and a handsome life partner through the matching of horoscopes is known as “Gun Milan method”. But as per observed experience and time tested case histories, this method is not the last answer. Instances are not wanting when it has been seen that even after proper matching of horoscopes under this method there have been cases of failures in marriages like discontent, discord and even divorces in marriages, apart from unfortunate events in the longevity of marriages like premature deaths of one of the partners or both the partners. In this type of matching (Milap), there are 36 scoring matching points and a minimum of 18 points are needed for predicting a prospective successful marriage between two marrying partners. It has been seen and observed that even after securing 30 or more points under this method of matching, there have been cases of various types of disasters in marriages between the two married partners. So it has to be understood as to what is this type of matching based upon as per astrological parameters. Here as per this approach, Moon is taken as the base for all purposes, while assessing the compatibility of matching, as Moon as per its astrological significations indicates the mental frame of a person. As such as per the concept of this method of matching a proper mental compatibility between the two marrying partners viz. husband and wife has to be almost the same, if not absolutely the same during the hours and moments of difficult times in their life for having a happy married life, to bear and sustain the brunt of such difficult times. Similarly there has to be equal response and sharing in their approach while enjoying the happier moments of their life as per this method of matching of horoscopes, which includes the mutual sexual desires and compatibility of the two marrying partners. It is presumed that if both the partners show equal mental agreement on all the issues of day to day life including the component of sex, many problems of day to day life can be resolved by them without fostering any difference of opinion between them. This is the approach as per this method of matching. This type of matching is sub-divided further in to eight sub sections viz Varna (1) point,Vaishya(2) points,Tara (3)points,Yoni (4) points, Greh-maitre(5) points,Gana-maitre (6) points, Bhukoot (7) points, Nadi (8) points.
All these sub-heads in this type of matching are based upon the position of Moon, viz. either through the rashi in which Moon is placed, or the nakhshatra in which the Moon is placed, and its equivalent positive or negative position is seen and compared in the two relative birth charts of the marrying partners viz. the male and the female.
The Gun Milan assessment is made accordingly considering all the plus and the minus points. This type of matching is thus based upon certain characteristics of Moon in a birth chart which shows certain inclinations of one’s mind towards various presumed options of the approaches of the mind, towards the faculty of one’s marriage and its utility.
It does not however cover the other vital and relevant astrological parameters which govern the basic promise of marriage, its level of success and longevity, its delays or even the denials, as also the ultimate longevity of marriage between the two marrying partners.
An appropriate approach for achieving an appropriate matching in this regard will be through ‘Bhavas’ and ‘Karkas’, which can be called as ‘Bhava Matching’or ‘Bhava Milan’. Bhava matching or Milan is an important factor in the proper and appropriate matching of horoscopes. It plays an important role in deciding the level and the extent of the promise of marriage, its level of success and the quality of marriage, the delays or even the denials in marriages, as also the ultimate longevity of the marriage.
the relevant Bhavas and Karkas under these parameters are mentioned as under:-
Bhavas:–
>1st house or lagna indicating the capacity and strength of a person to marry.
>2nd house indicating the longevity of the life partner and the structure and the composition of one’s family.
>4th house indicating the comforts of one’s family life.
>7th house indicating the life partner or the spouse.
>8th house indicating the longevity of the self and the immediate family of the life partner. It is equally the house of Suhag for a female native and is equally called as the Mangaliya Bhava. It is also the house of the various events in one’s life and thus plays an important role in the matters of marriage.
>12th house indicating the house of marital relationship and this house is very much significant in determining the success or the failure of the marital life and is considered very much important for the marital happiness, so for as the conjugal part of the marriage is concerned.
>5th house is the house of Purva Puniya apart from being the house of progeny. It is the house of emotions and the mental inclinations as well. If 5th house/lord is strong and there may be delay in marriage for any other reason as per the astrological combinations and parameters, but the marriage cannot be denied. 5th house/lord decides and indicates the promise of the child birth, which has direct and a significant relevance to one’s marriage.
Brief Explanation:-
(1).“Lagna is the most important house in any horoscope. A strong lagna and a strong lagna lord ensures good events in life and also indicates good health and physical conditions of a person. Physical fitness is an essential requirement for a successful married life.”
(2).The 7th house ruling the matrimonial matters is the middle house in a horoscope, sandwiched between the house of enemy and death (6th and the 8th house). This is very much significant in the matters of marriage. After marriage a person has a family to look after which needs protection of all sorts. Society will pounce upon the person if the person or the spouse makes a wrong move. Economic factors will draw him into a vicious circle of problems unless he is careful. The rearing of the children in a proper way and an overall maintenance of the family in a dignified way denotes that a person has to gear himself/herself up to a defensive posture. Thus the positioning of the 7th house between the house of enemy and death appears quite significant in itself. It is equally known as the “ Kalatra Bhava.”
(3). Marriage is basically a union of two un-known persons which is indicated in a birth chart by the 1st house and the 7th house respectively.
(4). The union of the two persons makes the beginning or the commissioning of a new family represented by the 2nd house.
(5). The happiness and prosperity of this family is represented by the 4th house.
(6). The family grows by the birth of the children which is a direct manifestation of destiny and mental aptitude represented by the 5th house.
(7). The longevity of the married life is represented by the 8th house.
(8). The mutual conjugal relationship after marriage is represented by the 12th house.
Thus as per Parashari principles the promise of marriage, its longevity, its quality and then the delay or even the denial of marriage in any horoscope has to be seen as under:-
>For primary considerations analyze the strength of the lagna, the 7th house and the 2nd house along with their lords.
>For secondary considerations analyze the strength of the 8th house and the 12th house along with their lords.
>For the considerations of the progeny an off shoot of marriage and very much vital to the issue analyze the strength and the condition of the 5th house/5th lord. This is very important and vital to the whole issue and process of marriage.
>PAC (Position, Aspect and conjunction) of the natural Karkas of marriage viz. Venus and Jupiter both with the malefic planets as also the benefic planets as also their placements, and then as secondary Karkas
Analyze the role of Moon and Rahu as well.
Karkas (Significators)
>Natural Karkas (Planets which accentuate particular aspects of life) for marriage are Venus and Jupiter, when Venus is generally considered as a significator for males and the Jupiter is considered as a significator for females.
>Moon and Rahu also play a vital role in the matter of marriages.
(Mars is the cause of valour for in marriage & Venus is the cause of passion in marriage).
“For proper and appropriate matching of horoscopes of the male and the female, all these specific Bhavas in their respective birth charts should match particularly in respect of their malefic nature. To illustrate it further it can be said that suppose there is a malefic influence on the 2nd house of the male chart, it should be ensured that similar malefic influence is there in the 2nd house of the female chart as well. Same shall be true about the other Bhavas as well. In this manner there will be a perfect matching of the two birth charts of the male and the female and then alone the matching will be a perfect matching. “Gun Milan” is equally required to be done as per the prescribed norms; yet, this alone should not be made the ultimate basis for ensuring a perfect matching for a prosperous and a happy married life between the two marrying partners. Bhava Milan as explained above should equally be ensured perfectly and fully for a prosperous and a happy married life between the two marrying partners.
(Effects of Mars known as Mangal Dosha has also to be taken account of appropriately. The Mangal Dosha synthesis will be elaborated seperatley in another article, which will probably follow this article, if allowed by the esteemed editorial board of the Naad).
